1. Information the App Accesses
Zonal accesses device information and capabilities only to provide features you choose to use. The App does not require an account and does not collect your name, email address, contacts, advertising ID, photos, messages, or payment information.
1.1 Location Data
Zonal can use the Google Play Services Fused Location Provider to obtain approximate or precise location derived from sources such as GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular signals. Location is used to determine the time zone at your current position using a time zone boundary database bundled with the App. Zonal does not send your location to us, to an advertising service, or to an analytics service.
If you grant location access, the App stores the following information locally on your device:
- The latitude, longitude, reported accuracy, and time of the most recent location that produced a time zone result. This baseline lets the App determine whether you have moved far enough to require another full time zone lookup. It remains on the device until it is replaced by a newer result or you clear the App's data or uninstall the App.
- A coarse on-device cache that maps geographic grid cells of approximately 0.05 degrees by 0.05 degrees (about 5.5 kilometers at the equator) to time zones. Cache entries are designed to expire after 90 days, the cache is capped at 2,000 entries, and old cache files are removed when the App version changes. This cache reduces repeated processing of the bundled time zone map.
Location permission is optional. You may deny or revoke it and select a time zone manually. Approximate location is sufficient for most automatic detection. Precise location enables GPS fallback in remote areas and at sea. If you separately allow background location, Zonal can update automatic time zone features, alarms, and widgets while the App is closed or not in use. You may deny background access and continue using foreground or manual time zone selection.
1.2 Cellular Network Information
If you grant phone-state permission, Zonal reads cellular network country information, such as the network country code derived from the Mobile Country Code (MCC), to identify countries that have a single time zone and to detect border crossings with less location use. Zonal does not access your phone number, device serial number, call logs, SMS messages, contacts, or call contents. The cellular country observation itself is not sent off the device or retained as a history.
1.3 Activity Recognition
Zonal uses the Google Play Services Activity Recognition API to detect whether you are stationary, walking, or in a vehicle. This information is used solely to optimize battery consumption by adjusting the frequency of location updates—for example, by reducing location polling while you are stationary. Activity recognition data is processed in real time and is not stored by Zonal or transmitted to Zonal servers.
1.4 Installed-App Information for Widget Actions
When you open the widget action picker, Zonal asks Android for apps that can be launched from the home screen or can respond to clock and alarm intents. This lets you choose an app to open when a widget area is tapped. The list is displayed locally and is not transmitted or retained as a complete list. If you select an app, Zonal stores that app's package name, activity name, display name, and applicable launch action locally as part of that widget's settings.
1.5 User-Created Content and Settings
Zonal stores the information you enter or configure, including alarms and labels, alarm time zones and ringtone selections, monitored and home time zones, widget appearance and action settings, permission and onboarding choices, and general preferences. This information is used only to provide the corresponding App features.
2. How Information Is Used
Information accessed or stored by Zonal is used for the following purposes:
- Automatic time zone detection: Determining and displaying the time zone at your location.
- Location-efficiency features: Avoiding unnecessary location requests and repeated processing when your location has not materially changed.
- Battery optimization: Adjusting location activity based on whether you are stationary or moving.
- Alarm management: Scheduling and presenting alarms in the automatic, home, or fixed time zone you select.
- Widgets and monitored zones: Displaying configured time zones and carrying out locally configured widget tap actions.
- App preferences: Remembering your display, sound, onboarding, and permission choices.
- Crash reporting and App stability (optional): Sending technical crash information to Firebase Crashlytics if you opt in, as described in Section 4.2.
Zonal does not use information for advertising, behavioral profiling, marketing, or sale. The App does not include an advertising SDK or an analytics SDK.
3. On-Device Storage and Backups
Zonal stores operational and user-created data in the App's private storage on your Android device:
- Alarms, alarm instances, and monitored time zones are stored in a local Room/SQLite database.
- Time zone selections, the most recent location baseline, the coarse time zone cache, widget settings, selected external-app actions, alarm defaults, and other preferences are stored in private app preferences.
- Some alarm and widget information is stored in Android device-protected storage so alarms and widgets can function after a reboot and before the first device unlock.
Zonal disables Android backup for the App and excludes its private data from cloud backup and device-to-device transfer. The App does not provide cloud synchronization. Clearing Zonal's storage or uninstalling the App deletes its local database, preferences, location baseline, and cache, subject to Android's handling of app removal and any diagnostic data already sent to Firebase Crashlytics.
4. Third-Party Services and Data Transmission
Zonal does not sell personal information or share information with advertisers, data brokers, social networks, or marketing platforms.
4.1 Google Play Services
Zonal receives location results through the Google Play Services Fused Location Provider and uses the Google Play Services Activity Recognition API for battery optimization. Google Play Services is supplied and controlled by Google and operates according to your Android and Google settings and Google's Privacy Policy. Zonal uses location and activity results on-device and does not transmit them to Zonal servers.
4.2 Firebase Crashlytics
Zonal includes Firebase Crashlytics, a crash-reporting service provided by Google LLC. Crash reporting is disabled by default. You may opt in during onboarding or later change the setting within the App.
When crash reporting is enabled, Crashlytics may transmit and process technical information such as:
- Crash stack traces, exception types and messages, thread information, and crash timestamps.
- App identifier, App version, and information needed to process and symbolicate the crash.
- Device and operating-system information such as model, OS version, CPU architecture, available RAM and disk space, orientation, and whether the App was in the background.
- Crashlytics and Firebase installation identifiers and a randomly generated session identifier used to associate and deduplicate crash events.
- Network service information necessarily involved in communicating with Google, which may include an IP address processed by Google as Firebase service data.
Zonal does not intentionally attach your name, email address, phone number, alarms, selected time zones, or location coordinates to crash reports. Crashlytics identifiers are installation-specific technical identifiers; they are not advertising identifiers, but they can distinguish one App installation from another.
When crash reporting is disabled, Zonal does not authorize Crashlytics to transmit crash reports. The Crashlytics SDK may retain unsent crash information locally on the device. If you later enable reporting, previously retained unsent reports may be sent to Crashlytics. If you disable reporting after previously enabling it, the change applies according to the Crashlytics SDK's lifecycle, and reports already sent remain subject to Google's retention practices. Clearing the App's storage or uninstalling the App removes locally retained unsent reports.
Firebase Crashlytics data is processed under the applicable Firebase terms, Google Privacy Policy, and Firebase privacy and security information.
4.3 Other Network Activity
Apart from optional Crashlytics reporting and communication performed by Android or Google Play Services under their own controls, Zonal does not send alarms, preferences, selected apps, time zone choices, or location coordinates to an external server. When you choose an external link or configure a widget to launch another app, Android transfers control to your browser or the selected app; that app's own privacy practices then apply.
5. Data Retention
- User-created data and preferences: Retained locally until you delete or replace them, clear the App's storage, or uninstall the App.
- Most recent location baseline: Retained locally until a newer successful location result replaces it, or until App storage is cleared or the App is uninstalled.
- Coarse time zone cache: Individual entries are designed to expire after 90 days and are removed during later cache access or pruning. The cache is capped at 2,000 entries and is reset when the App version changes.
- Locally retained Crashlytics reports: Controlled by the Crashlytics SDK and removable by clearing App storage or uninstalling the App.
- Crash reports sent to Google: Firebase states that Crashlytics retains crash stack traces and associated identifiers for 90 days before beginning removal from its live and backup systems. Current details are available in Firebase's privacy documentation.
6. Your Choices and Rights
6.1 Permission and Feature Controls
- Location: You may deny or revoke approximate, precise, or background location access through Android Settings. Manual time zone selection remains available.
- Activity recognition: You may deny or revoke activity-recognition permission. Zonal will continue to function but will use its default location behavior instead of adapting it to your movement state.
- Phone state: You may deny or revoke phone-state permission. Zonal will rely on location or manual selection instead of cellular-country callbacks.
- Notifications and alarm access: You may control notification, exact-alarm, full-screen notification, and Do Not Disturb access through Android Settings. Restricting these capabilities may prevent alarms from appearing or firing as expected.
- Crash reporting: You may leave crash reporting disabled or change the setting within Zonal. Section 4.2 explains how unsent reports are handled.
- Widget app actions: You may avoid the installed-app picker, select no action, or remove/reconfigure a widget at any time.
6.2 Access and Deletion
You can view and edit alarms, time zones, and settings through the App. You can delete all locally stored Zonal data by clearing the App's storage in Android Settings or uninstalling the App. To ask about diagnostic data already sent through Crashlytics, contact us at the address below. Because Zonal does not operate user accounts and Crashlytics identifiers are not linked to your name or email by Zonal, we may need information from you to determine whether a particular request can be fulfilled.
6.3 European Economic Area and United Kingdom
For personal data for which Zonal is the controller, the data controller is Pelagos LLC, a Wyoming (USA) limited liability company. You may contact us at dev@zonal.dev.
Where the App processes location on your device, the processing is based on your choice to grant Android location permission and may be withdrawn by revoking that permission. Optional Crashlytics reporting is based on your affirmative choice to enable it and may be withdrawn by disabling it. Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or port personal data, object to processing, and lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
Zonal has not appointed a Data Protection Officer because its core activities do not involve large-scale systematic monitoring or large-scale processing of special-category data. Questions and requests may be sent directly to dev@zonal.dev.
6.4 California
Zonal does not sell personal information and does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. California residents may have rights to know, correct, or delete personal information and to receive equal service when exercising applicable rights. Most Zonal data is stored only on your device and can be managed through the App or Android Settings. Requests concerning optional crash-reporting data may be sent to dev@zonal.dev.
6.5 Brazil and Other Jurisdictions
Depending on where you live, applicable law may provide rights such as confirmation of processing, access, correction, anonymization, portability, deletion, information about sharing, or withdrawal of consent. You may exercise applicable rights by using the controls described above or contacting us.
7. Children's Privacy
Zonal is not directed to children. The App is a general-purpose time zone and alarm utility for travelers, and we do not knowingly seek names, email addresses, or other directly identifying information from children. Optional Crashlytics reporting is disabled by default and is used only for App stability and internal operations. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has provided personal information through the App, contact us so we can evaluate and address the request.
8. International Processing
Zonal's alarms, preferences, selected time zones, selected widget apps, and location baseline and cache remain on your device. If you enable Crashlytics, Google may process crash-reporting information in the United States or other countries where Google or its service providers operate. Such processing is governed by Google's and Firebase's applicable terms and safeguards.
9. Security
Locally stored data is protected by Android's application sandbox and your device's security features. Zonal disables Android backup and does not provide cloud synchronization. Crashlytics reports are transmitted using encrypted connections and Firebase states that Crashlytics data is encrypted at rest. No storage or transmission method can be guaranteed to be completely secure, so keeping Android and Google Play Services updated is recommended.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in the App, third-party services, or applicable law. We will update the "Last Updated" date when we do so. If a material change requires additional notice or consent, we will provide it through an appropriate channel, such as the App or its Google Play listing, before the change takes effect where required.
